Mountains The topography of the Turia Valley is comprised of rugged mountains, mixed with various valleys oriented in all directions and formed by the numerous creeks and streams that can be found in the valley. The rough orography of the area has permitted the development of a wonderful landscape. This allows visitors to enjoy urban areas as well as wild landscapes, and to discover ancient ways of life and customs. Forest & Rivers The surrounds is home to a wide range of natural habitats, both in terms of its flora and fauna. Particularly worthy of mention is its tidal estuary, which forms part of the Natura 2000 Network as a Site of Community Importance, together with the River Eo. The vegetation in the Turia Valley is composed of forests of chestnut, oak, birch and some areas of pine and eucalyptus trees. The hydrographic network is composed of many streams and creeks that flow through the valley. The most important rivers are the Eo, Turia, Ouria and Cabreira which make their way from various streams. Most rivers flow into the valley to the river Eo. The river fauna is the richest in the valley and you can find many trout and salmon in its abundant water. Since 1989 it has also been a Special Protection Area for Birds, and a Wetland of International Importance included in the Ramsar Agreement since 1994. |
Beaches The coastline is scattered with numerous white sandthin beaches, the finest of which is undoubtedly As Catredrais. Tradition Turia Valley cutlery is well known.Some of the old ferreiros (blacksmiths) who had emigrated from Italy to the Basque Country, later found in the valley the ideal place to set up their businesses. There are no traces of Palaeolithic settlements, however there are remains which date back to the period between Palaeolithic and Neolithic times. Place names are indicative of hill-fort and Roman cultures. Today, many of the local traditions have been maintained and passed down through generations. Evidence of this are the protection and breeding of certain species of farm animals native to the area. Also the local gastronomy is soley authentic and original to the region. |

Ethnography The ethnographic collection at Teixois (hydraulic devices from the 18th and 19th centuries), and the exhibition to be seen at Esquíos (tools and implements from a blacksmiths country house) enable us to understand the integration of man with Nature.
